In 2024, Laurin Strele photographed Ukrainian soldiers in trenches and wooded positions where combat is measured in spent ammunition, long waits and sudden movement. The sequence stays close to the physical labor of war: watching, firing, moving through earthworks and preparing for what may come next.
It then follows the conflict outward, into homes and churches torn open, vehicles burned to their frames, and a community carrying a coffin beneath Ukrainian flags. The essay connects the immediacy of the front to what follows behind it, showing destruction as a chain of consequences that passes from combat positions into civilian space, rehabilitation rooms, hospitals and collective mourning.
