The story behind Flying Wall
At the Shaolin Monastery in China, a routine training session becomes a study in rhythm and suspension. Young monks in yellow robes line a weathered red wall: one stretches, another seems to run through the air, while a third disappears at the edge of the frame. Laurin Strele’s angled composition holds exertion and stillness in a single breath.
The photograph captures the daily discipline behind the legendary “Flying Wall” technique without turning the moment into spectacle. Recognised by several international photography awards and selected among The Independent Photographer’s ten best images of 2025, the work brings movement, texture and quiet devotion into the room.
