This archived workshop programme took place from 15 to 20 March 2025 and used the Kathmandu Valley as a setting for documentary, street and portrait photography.
Working with experienced photographers, multilingual guides and local experts, participants photographed Kathmandu’s markets, religious sites, historic architecture and everyday life. The group was limited to six photographers, with local support and cultural-sensitivity guidance throughout the journey.
Programme
- UNESCO World Heritage sites including Swayambhunath, Boudhanath and Bhaktapur
- The Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, with a focus on Newari architecture and culture
- Morning activity at Ason Market, including fresh-produce and spice trading
- Pashupatinath Temple and sacred rituals along the Bagmati River
- Stupas, intricate carvings and lively markets considered as elements of Kathmandu’s visual culture
- Street and portrait photography focused on local traditions, lifestyles and spiritual practices

- Accommodation in a four-star hotel in central Kathmandu
- Air-conditioned transport for excursions
- All meals, local guide fees and entrance fees to heritage sites

Suggested equipment
DSLR or mirrorless camera, a wide-angle lens, a 50 mm portrait lens, a zoom lens for details and a sturdy tripod.
Clothing and essentials
Light, comfortable clothing for warm weather; modest clothing for temple visits; comfortable walking shoes; personal toiletries; sunscreen; a hat; and a basic first-aid kit.
Visa and insurance
Nepal offered visas on arrival to many nationalities. Participants were asked to verify the requirements applicable to their nationality. The programme required travel insurance and advised participants to confirm appropriate coverage before departure.
