GEO Magazine: Baba Loknath Celebration in Bangladesh

A photograph from the Baba Loknath celebration in Bangladesh appears in the November 2025 issue of GEO Magazine.

Baba Loknath celebration in Bangladesh, published in GEO Magazine, November 2025.

Laurin Strele’s photograph from the annual Baba Loknath celebration in Bangladesh appears in the November 2025 issue of GEO Magazine.

Each October, thousands of Hindus gather to honour the philosopher Baba Loknath through fasting and prayers that continue through the night. Oil lamps made from banana leaves traditionally illuminate the offerings. In recent years, their warm light has begun to mingle with LEDs, marking a quiet shift within the ritual.

Made in 2023, the photograph observes how a spiritual tradition accommodates contemporary life without relinquishing its collective meaning. Light becomes both the subject and a measure of continuity, connecting devotion, identity and change.

The feature appears in GEO 11/2025, available in print and digital editions. My thanks to the magazine’s editors for giving this work a place in the issue.
